Having rapidly established themselves as prominent curators of tripped-out techno & progressive house, both on-air and through gender-inclusive parties dotted around Bristol, the Organics collective are taking the leap to achieve label status with an EP by Delay Grounds. On ‘Sun Blind, Running On Wet Sand’, the Pressure Dome and Lapsus Records signee dishes up 3 hits of vibrant club cuts inspired by his seaside upbringing in Hastings. Approaching production with a process of deep introspection, observance of his internal consciousness and mediations on the world around him, the resulting EP is full of hazy nostalgia for warm evenings spent on the sands - a soundtrack to the dilapidated ruins of half-remembered childhood images.
Opening up proceedings is 'Sand Castle’, a real tale of two halves of a track which oscillates between moments of warm serenity and stark ferociousness. Airy pads seem to float in and around percussive elements like rays of the setting sun. The bassline underpinning the composition grows in prominence throughout the track like an object on the shoreline coming into focus.
Slowly building up the tempo, the following title track is a very "Bristol" roller that's built to make your synapses go brr. Constructing an intricate array of pad synths soaked in granular delay and sampled bells panned on wide, Delay Grounds has birthed a real head-spinner of a tune which, nonetheless, never loses sight of dance-floor functionality. The producer’s meticulous approach to sound design comes through most clearly on this track too, with interesting shrieks of feedback and vocal chops gained and compressed to high heaven slicing through the bed of textures.
Rounding off the EP is the joyous ‘Rock Pooling’; a cerebral house tune chock-full of interesting twists and automated turns. It's another track full of dualities, with a glimmering lead synth which bounces over the beat in contrast to a low-end which sporadically snarls as it creeps into ear-shot. Much like the environments of Delay Grounds’ seaside upbringing, there’s a foreboding edge lurking just beyond the frame of this picturesque scene. A masterclass in musical evolution, over +6 minutes, Delay Grounds keeps crucial elements intact whilst tweaking the dynamics so every phrase feels fresh.
Full of unusual textures and grooves and conceptually underpinned by ideas Delay Grounds absolutely delivers on sonically, 'Sun Blind, Running On Wet Sand' is a confident statement from young producer & a young label tapped into a new wave of queer artists taking dance music to higher euphoric levels. We suggest you dive in… the water's fine!
